Our community suffered a great loss in May of 2022 when the underside of a structural concrete panel detached and fell in a bedroom of a townhome unit in Block H of the Swansea Mews community, injuring a resident. Since then, the Chief Building Officer deemed the site uninhabitable, having been built with unsafe materials. All tenants were ordered to be relocated. The relocation process took several months as appropriate accommodations were found for the tenants. Further, there were several belongings of the tenants that were left support behind and still stored in their units.
Now that the tenants have been safely relocated, TCHC in collaboration with City staff are in the process of creating an Initial Development Proposal (IDP) which will consider the general site layout and the guiding principles for future development on the site. The IDP Report will then be brought to the TCHC Board, Planning and Housing Committee, and finally City Council for approval. This work is estimated to be completed later this year.
Following IDP approval, planning and engagement for a rezoning application will commence.
Our office will TCHC through this and keep residents informed of the process through our weekly newsletter at https://gordperks.ca
Structural Engineers with Toronto Community Housing are working to rebuild the Mews. I've been in constant contact with tenants, City staff, and many concerned neighbours to ensure that we rebuild to the highest standards and support Mews residents as the work moves forward. Staying engaged at every step must be a priority for the local government—it will certainly be my priority.
